SSG's Choi hits his 470th career home run,3rd player in history to reach 4,000 RBIs

The KBO's all-time home run leader Choi Jung-jeong (SSG Landers) became the third player in history to reach the 4,000-run plateau with his 470th career home run.

Choi hit a come-from-behind solo home run in the top of the eighth inning of the second game of a doubleheader against the Kia Tigers of the 2024 Shinhan SolBank KBO League at Gwangju-Kia Champions Field on Wednesday.

With the score tied 6-6 in the top of the eighth, Choi led off the inning with a two-seamer from Kia right-hander Do-hyun Kim, a low, 147 mph fastball over the right-field wall.

It was Choi's first home run since May. It had been 11 games since he fired up the cannon on April 28 against KT Wiz.

With his 12th home run of the season, Choi joined Jonathan Peraza (Hanwha Eagles) and Kang Baek-ho (KT) as the team leaders in home runs.

Choi hit his 468th career home run on April 24 against the Lotte Giants to overtake Lee Seung-yeop (467) for the sole lead in career home runs, and then added two more to reach 470.

Choi, who had 3,996 hits before the second game of the doubleheader, also reached 4,000 career hits with the home run.

Choi registered his first RBI on May 14, 2005, against Hanwha in Daejeon, and has recorded triple-digit RBIs every year since the 2006 season.

He has hit over 200 RBIs every year since 2016, and in 2017, he hit a career-high 294 RBIs in a single season. On April 8, 2017, Choi drove in 16 runs with four home runs against the NC Dinos, tying the KBO record for most RBIs in a single game.

With 1,487 career hits, Choi is one step closer to becoming the second player in history to reach 1,500 career hits. Only Choi Hyung-woo has reached 1,500 RBIs in his career.
